Mono-tert – Butyl Hydroquinone [MTBHQ]

Introduction :

Mono –tert-butylhydroquinone finds use primarily as a polymerization inhibitor and industrial antioxidant. Compared with unsubstituted hydroquinone, its higher solubility and increased potency at higher temperatures combine to make it more useful in many application. It is also an interesting organic intermediate because of its hindered hydroxyl group.

TYPICAL PROPERTIES

Applications:

Retarder: Mono-tert-butylhydroquinone is an effective polymerization retarder for use in storing and shipping unsaturated polyesters and certain other polymerizable systems. Studies have shown that MTBHQ is a Potent Polymerization retarder under normal polymer storage conditions .Although its potency diminishes rapidly with increasing temperature , MTBHQ is an effective retarder even at temperatures as 114°c

Antioxidant:
MTBHQ, at concentrations of 0.01%to 1.0% is a useful antioxidant in unstable organic  liquids such as chlorinated hydrocarbons , certain oils ethers , and aldehydes, and in preparations containing these ingredients, In some cases, the potency of MTBHQ is greater than that of hydroquinone.

Stabilizer:
At a concentration of 0.5%  MTBHQ has been found to be an effective heat and light stabilizer for pressure –sensitive adhesives based on poly (Vinyl ethyl ether) resins. These stabilized films are reported to be superior to many commercially available rubber based adhesives.

Food –Grade Antoxidant:
MTBHQ should not be confused with TBHQ antioxidant. TBHQ is a highly refined grade of mono-tert-butylhydroquinone for use in stabilizing various edible oils, fats, and foods against oxidative deterioration.

MTBHQ is shipped in non returnable fibre drums having a net weight of 25 Kgs.
